S/O Duties & Description
Hi,
Question(s) from a prospective S/O: How is the timeline of an S/O during a flight? By this I mean, where does the S/O sit during T/O & Ldg, when does the S/O assume the cruise duties (duration into flight) and how long does the S/O remain at the station before vacating? Who does the S/O sit with (Capt, FO, alone?) What seat does the S/O sit in? I heard a rumour a CX longhaul flight has 2 SO? Is the S/O responsible for many pre/post flight duties? Cheers (ps: the only SO duty thread I saw in search mode was from 2001) |
Question(s) from a prospective S/O:
How is the timeline of an S/O during a flight? By this I mean, where does the S/O sit during T/O & Ldg, when does the S/O assume the cruise duties (duration into flight) and how long does the S/O remain at the station before vacating? SO sits in the jump seat for TO and landing, SO gets in the seat at the discretion of the commander ie. he decides how the rest periods will be broken up. Whatever happens the captain / FO will sit in the seats until top of climb. Who does the S/O sit with (Capt, FO, alone?) What seat does the S/O sit in? So sits with Capt or relief qualified FO (assumes duties of captain while the captain rests.) I heard a rumour a CX longhaul flight has 2 SO? Haven't heard of this? Is the S/O responsible for many pre/post flight duties? No. SO usually does the cockpit safety checks, sometimes sets up the FMS at the discretion of the captain /FO. |
Is the S/O responsible for many pre/post flight duties? Can also expect to carry the 'blue doc bag' to and from the a/c, even though this is a PM task. Expect to be condescended by some and have your enthusiasm deflated by others. Laugh at the crap jokes, eat the sandwiches, talk to the girls and learn to suck eggs. Fly the sim like an ace every 2 months. Wait 3-4 years while the company recruits DEFO's and then another 10 for a command. Dont forget the endless partying downroute. Pretty cushy number really. Good luck. MAX:cool: |
MAX: Sounds like you were/are a 747 SO - 777 SOs dont do bunks!
|
Max got all the info's right, a friend of mine who is an SO on the A330, from another airline does pretty bit all the things mentioned and added to that there are times that they were the ones brewing up coffee and the like for the Capt/F.O.... (maybe it's a well concocted mix i suppose... hehehe) :ugh:

Mine is a cup of tea with milk and two sugars.........(note the missing "please")

Airbus SO's don't make the bunks either.

SO gets all the chicks.:ok:

Yeah probably because the FO and CAPT are yrs older! :}

If anyone could post some details of a typical HK based SO roster that would be great.
RDO's, standby/reserve days, duty and flight hrs ect cheers |
cool, thanks.

777 So
What would a SO be doing on the 777 fleet? Longer routes therefore less trips per month??
|
when I first started, 3 long haul per month with a sim every two months. now currently 4 trips a month with a sim every two months. In the last month 5 trips and two sims?? And no I didnt work on a G day..... so I'm not too sure what a typical roster will be in the future, but the norm was 3.5 trips a month. One sim every 2 months. In the last 12 months I did about 20 reserve days, but I've been call out on all recently. Being on the Airbus, we fly to OZ and everywhere else, so flights vary from 8 to 13 hours. typically I have between 10 and 18 days off a month, I havent had 18 days off on a roster for a long time though. So I think it's a pretty good job with a heap of time off to travel around the region. I hope this helps |
