jumpseating
 

I just got the call for class in April, but the offer is for and ANC home base. I don't live there (don't plan to, either) so my next move would be jumpseating. I know it's out on US carriers, but, at the risk of a stupid question, cx pilots may jumpseat on their own company, right? So I still would only need to get to a port that Cathay serves to ANC, yeah? Makes for a long commute, one I wasn't really planning for.
Hope somebody out there has some insight, this could be a deal-breaker...:sad:

No jump seating on the freighters unfortunately and the pax service out of Toronto to Hong Kong that stops over in Anchorage is only a tech stop. No pax including ID staff travellers can get on or off. Your only option I can see is ID 90 on US carriers which I have been told is extremely difficult particularly in the summer. Maybe some other US based guys can give you more info.

Cathay does not allow jumpseaters on their freighters, although they may PX you. You will also find ID travel to/from ANC very difficult: in summer there are not many seats available due to tourists and in winter the airlines reduce their schedules. There are also many US pilots commuting to/from ANC who will get on in front of a ID-ticket Cathay pilot.

can cx pilots jumpseat on cx pax aircraft? Or is it strictly via the pass benefit program?

Wanderer, do you mind if I ask what your base preferences were? I thought ANC was a senior base.

Yes you can jump seat on most CX pax aircraft at the commander’s discretion. It isn’t free though. You will pay for an ID90 economy class seat for the privilege.

When was your second interview? And what were your base choices?

You will be competing with pilots from UPS and Northwest out of ANC all whom have jumpseat privileges which CX does not have. Realistically full fare tickes maybe necessary during summer. Call a ticket/travel agent and ask what months are the busiest travel season for ANC to verify this info.

Wanderer...not to be the bearer of bad news.....but the commuting between Anc and the lower 48,I did it for a year before nearly losing my job,is one of the most heavily commuted routes there is......in a nutshull,my advice...Dont.........the winter months are slow but as I fly these routes regularly we see full loads on many occasions......and even our own pilots,who commute get left behind .......

Anyway...whats wrong with Anc...flew up there for 10 yrs and loved the place....(here it comes)....PB
