New-Hire Question ???

Hi guys, I know that this question has been asked in the past but I can't seem to find it anywhere. First of all: can a newly hired S/O expect to get any amount of time off (to help move the rest of his family over) between the Adelaide training and his actual start date?

Also, does Cathay offer new hires any discounted (or free) travel between HK and their home country between this period to help with the move?

Thank you for your input.

My experience was no you won't. From the time I left Adelaide until line training began the longest I had off was 3 days. The first real stretch of time off I had was after my first 2 sectors which was just over 3 months after arriving in Adelaide. As for your second question the company provides free of charge very high priority tickets for your family to come over. However if you want to go and get them you will have to apply to your fleet manager for approval to get an ID 90 to fly over and back.

I agree with everything marbles has to say as far as time off is concerned. Many people seem to prefer to NOT have their family with them for the first few weeks of ground school, although this is a personal preference of course.

With regard to ID90 ticketing, you are only entitled to CX discounted flights between domicile and HK during your first 6 months. Note that you do NOT have interline rights for this time – in other words CX is the only carrier you can use. The rule applies to both you and your family however, so if you wife / kids come over early, you can fly them home ID90. As an admin point, ID90 tickets purchased in the first 6 months have to be paid ‘up front’. If you do not use the ticket however you can claim the full amount back.

Fleet manager approval depends on which fleet you are with, and at what stage of training you are. Once you are on the line, it’s normally your responsibility to be in the right place at the right time, and adequately rested.
