Ques: The lift coefficient (CL) of an aeroplane in steady flight is 0.42, increase in angle of attack of 1 degree increases CL by 0.1. A vertical up gust instantly changes the AOA by 3 degrees. The load factor will be?

Answer: 1.71

How?? Can someone explain with reason / calculation?

Hey

Well the question says u r in a steady flight so I assume lift equals weight. That means cl which is 0.42 is also the value for my weight and den since d angle of attack increased by 3° the cl becomes 0.72 but my weight remains 0.42 so load factor is 0.72/0.42=1.71 I hope u get it.

Last edited by avl998; 13th Feb 2015 at 05:59. Reason: Correction it's not click it was cl **

NOTE - Load Factor in Straight & Level Flight (SnL) = 1

The Question says - Increase in Angle of Attack (AoA) of 1 degree increases CL by 0.1. Therefore change of 3 degree AoA changes CL by 0.1 X 3 = 0.3
CL in SnL = 0.42
CL on experiencing Vertical Gust = 0.42 + 0.3 = 0.72
Now Calculate the % increase in Load Factor (LF) .72/.42 = 1.71
Therefore the increment in LF from SnL is 71%
New LF =( 1 + ( 71% X 1 )) = 1.71

Hope it helps.

Dunno how a 'caption' smokes, however........ Options: 1. Say a mental thanks that you will get to the left hand seat earlier than if 'cap' had not smoked 2. Carry a clothes-line peg and use it on your nose 3. Open the window 4. Pull down the oxygen mask and breathe BUT FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, DON'T PREACH TO THE 'CAP'!! (Pls excuse if that was a serious question......just thought to lighten the mood before the all important 22nd Feb!!)
