Cody: best ask the writer of the article that question! The article mentions the pilots "union" so by pure definition of the term I wrote what I did. Personal opinion there not disclosed!! My opinion as to the moral spine of many "pilot unions" is another issue which I've commented on in the past, and even started a thread on a while ago. Lack of action more often speaks louder than any action. But that's not for this discussion (???). I believe you are far better qualified than myself regarding things Singaporean. Personally though, "I plead the 5th" when it comes to my dealings and certain nationalities (whereby my own nationality would be far from spared!)

Well Mr etrang (or may I call you Ace? Mav? Iceman? SuperCoolDude?), your enquiry is well placed here. After all, I see you've taken the initiative to ask a rumour network about "facts" that you are "passionate" about so as to determine the next decade at least of your life. But before we proceed, may I ask you some questions first:
  • Are you able to grip your hands around your ankles while standing, and knees straight?
  • I cannot believe CX did not reply to you with an offer of employment. Did you tell them you were passionate? Whatever you do - and this is important! - do not (repeat DO NOT!) call them to gain 100% verifiable facts about your application. If the web site is down and a phone number is provided in lieu of that, don't even use that. Best you post on here instead.
  • Now, about that CX phone number: please, do not use google, a phone book, the information on their web site or any such silly l'il ole bit of factual information to get hold of it least of all use it. Once again, you are right to not review any of the other 249 pages of this thread, least of all the past 2 or 3 to pages that the same question has been asked.
  • May I suggest the Airbus 7-4-9000? I'm sure if you can design and configure it on xBox then we at CX will have it ready for you. Your passion and forward thinking places you in ideal stead for a Command position. Does it have winglets?
  • We at CX like "outside the box" thinkers and hence management like to be shown that they are wrong or there's a better way of doing things, plus you're saving wear and tear on your keyboard by spelling "thing" as "fing" is also taken into account. It's all about cost saving. Spelling standards, or standards anywhere that prevent profit are not what we're about. After reading your post we've employed several IT experts to re-write the iJourney system and several accountants at $250,000 HKD per month, plus $90,000 HKD housing and benefits to evaluate the $50 HKD saving over a keyboard's lifetime we might gain by saving use certain letters on our keyboards. (While a bit premature I've a sneaky suspicion we could be in for an award for this soon enough...! And with that budget let alone planning I can also see more bonuses! PS: What do you know of fuel hedging? Price fixing? Either way, no matter. Performance there doesn't affect forthcoming bonuses anyway!)
  • I'm sure you'll appreciate that these are hard times indeed for CX. As such we're reducing the remuneration package again. While B-Scale worked we didn't risk it to then severely lower minimum recruitment standards of experience or credentials. Having seen what we can do with C-Scale it's now open season for the rest of your career as once again I'm sure you can appreciate that, so thanks. To further cut costs, improve efficiency and remove the middle men I'll be sending you the bank accounts of recruitment standard decision makers for you to deposit a percentage of the money we're saving on your remuneration as our bonus. Once more, these are tough times and we know you appreciate that this burden is not for "us" to endure, so well done you on being part of the new generation at CX! They thank you. And I mean that very sincerely from the deep, deep depths of my wine cellar at my 7000 sq ft apartment at the Peak to my 2 holiday villas in Majorca and Tahiti.
(etrang: Glad to see some can have a sense of humour! )

Hi People !

I have applied in March 2012 but didn't hear anything from Cathay.
I have chosen India as my location for interview, is there anyone facing same situation as mine?
People who've applied after me already been called for an interview so totally confused.

Cheers !

Aviator265,

Just a suggestion, but perhaps you may want to try calling them and not rely on a 'rumour' forum. Rumour = Speculation

Cheers!

Thank you CB for the summary of the first 25 pages! It's very informative for new joiners like me.

Although i find some of your postings are a bit cynical, or may be that's the reality u see it, i doubt that it will deter anyone who's serious in their passion for aviation and making their dreams come true.

However I do appreciate that you share your view of reality here, I think everyone has their own personal reasons for staying/leaving and for some, they really need to take the hardway to find their own truth, to walk that path to know if it's really fit for them, so just let them be.

Anyway, thanks again and please continue to post more and share your insights as they are very valuable which also serves the purpose of this forum

Here is my account of the Initial A testing that I took yesterday and recieved and email today that I did not meet standards, when asked what standards or which part I was told that unsuccessful applicants don't get reasons and I would best know my own ability. Anyways for those going soon for the tests here is some info:

Ab-initio program. Initial A
Multiple choice questions (50 questions, 45 mins to complete them, Pick between four choices A-D)

These questions were pretty simple and straight forward and very basic as long as you studied the JKI booklet and know a bit about Cathay Pacific such as aircraft etc you will do perfectly fine.

Compass Aptitude Test. (90mins to do 7 different exercises)
1. A test with a compass, RDI and artificial horizon and you have to locate the correct airplane between 4 of them.

2. Slalom using the joystick and moving the aircraft between the two lines, keep your hand very steady and move the joystick slowly.

3. Rudder/Joystick, you have to keep and control the needle via the joystick and keep it at a specific spot. While at the same time keeping the rudder ball below in the middle specific spot too.

4. You have to enter updated info into the autopilot such at altitude, heading, radio while keeping an eye on the top for a red light at the top right and left hand boxes and pressing thye numerical key corresponding to it.

5. Memory test, very easy and basic such as Altitude, radio, speed, heading.

6. Maths test, I found this incredibly difficult as time was not enough and I rushed through it.

7. Mix of technical and logic questions, multiple choice as well.

Thats all folks, sucks that I was not up to standard but I won't fall Ill keep trying and try getting my PPL here in HK first. Cheers!

Pilot852,

Any suggestions or links to any websites where I could do it and how much money is it gonna set me back? I do have a full time currently so it's gonna be tough doing it overseas.

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and have been reading up.

I applied for the cadet program in June 2012, at first I thought I didn't get the chance for an interview, however CX gave me a call in Jan and arranged the Initial A interview on 21 Feb. I read the email and it says 2 parts will be taking part for Int A: Technical Multiple Choice questionnaire and a Compass aptitude test.

p.s I had no flying experience. I am a graduate from Biology major 2 years ago and have been working full time after graduation, have done nothing about aviation but have always got passion in it.

From my understanding on this thread, most people are saying, going through JKI booklet and some extra research will get you through the MC questionnaire. Correct? I also learnt from my research people are also saying that buying the book - "Pilots encyclopedia of aeronautical knowledge" will help me get through the basic knowledge about aviation. I just wonder if this book worth getting? Or are there any better materials you guys can suggest?

About the compass test, i just came across this website: Advanced Compass and Pilot Aptitude tests.-Latest Pilot Jobs
Is this really the CX compass test is all about? Because I have no idea what the compass aptitude test is. Is this the right website for me to subscribe to and practice from? Because I don't want to get on the wrong track by studying the wrong materials.

Sorry for the long post but I want to be more prepare for this interview since I guess I am kinda lucky to score my chance and I should do whatever possible to grab it.
I hope you guess can help me out!
Thanks
Vernon

Mediums - I recommend not doing it in Hong Kong for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it's very expensive to do it here. You need to pay $30k to join the HK Aero Club and the charges to use their aircraft etc are really high. So it's cheaper to do it elsewhere.

Secondly, in HK there is no cross-country flying so the HK PPL is not really a full PPL, most other countries do not recognize it so it's pretty much useless anywhere else.
Also I think you can only do your flying there at weekends so its gonna take a long time in HK.

I'm doing my PPL next month in New Zealand:
Air Hawke's Bay | Air New Zealand Aviation Institute Flight Training
A friend did his there and highly recommended it. Quite a few people in Hong Kong go there. The course costs about $110k including accommodation- not the cheapest but the accommodation is on the aerodrome which is a big plus.

Another place that came recommended is in South Africa:
Pilot Training Lanseria Flight School and Air Charter South Africa
They quoted $60-$70k for the course but that doesn't include accommodation.

I contacted a few schools in the UK and they also quoted about $60-$70k but the weather in the UK isn't great so it could take a long time to do it there.

There are also plenty of great schools in Australia, New Zealand and the US. Generally the schools in Australia and NZ are a bit more pricey but I hear that it's pretty cheap to do it in the US so it's worth looking into doing it there.

Hope that helps!

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't make the cut. I do applaud you for your proactiveness though!

With regards to flight training, I agree with Pilot852 in saying that Hong Kong isn't ideal when learning to fly fixed wing. The aerodrome in use is subject to the PLA's discretion, and the license obtained would be issued from the toothless HKCAD. Costs are prohibitive too.

If open to suggestions, the Philippines - Angeles Flying Club could be the place to get started. Although they primarily focus on microlight aircraft, it's cheap and it's flying none the less.
Angeles City Flying Club- An Ultralight Flying Club and Pilot School

Pilot852,
It's great to hear that you're heading to NZ to gain experience. I myself previously attended Air Hawkes Bay during the summer of 2012.

My experience with AHB was not completely unpleasant, but I encourage you to consider Hawkes Bay & East Coast Aero Club. This aero-club owns AHB and operate under the same roof (AHB is the subsidiary primarily aimed towards teaching NZ's diploma in aviation).
The most important factor is that they're cheaper! Feel free to PM me.

Nothing wrong with Cadets but realise you might be flying alone. "Oh Lord he doesn't Mach nor pressure altitude".

Simple. No big deal really.

"Please don't flare (inappropriately).. you did you bastard! "

Canada would be a decent place for initial training as well, especially in the winter time. Get some much needed experience with inclement weather, icing, and x/c nav over vast remote forests and lakes that all look the same. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think many cadets are lacking in those aspects... (not that you really need visual nav anyway once finished in ADL )
