Check the 'Resignations at KA" thread on Fragrant harbour.
In short-
1) KA's future is in China, as unattractive as that is.
2) The KA pay scale works for those who are young & single only. Others tread water or get marginally ahead through property & shares. Health declines. Management at KA & its the parent company are not participating in the demand driven salary increases seen in the ME & elsewhere in Asia, instead relying upon their former reputations as world class carriers to draw pilots. This has seen a lowering of entry standards but has a finite end point.
3) Anyone's guess. 7 years is quoted.
4) A poor standard of management & ruling by fear/ intimidation. Fortunately that culture has not permeated into the flight deck- a good bunch of guys in front of the cockpit door. Very little mix with cabin crew.
One must ask why there have been 28 resignations over the last twelve months (from First Officers to B744 Capts) & why the pilots have been in contract compliance for over 2 years. Take the time to read the 'Resignations' thread & good luck in the ME, Cheers.

Hey Guys Thanks,
I Really Never Thought Ka Will Turn Out So Bad.
The Way You Guys Describe It Sounds Like They Gotta Improve Their Conditions.
Its Kinda Sad To Hear This As Ka Has Always Been The Sort Of Company I Want To Join.
But Apparently Ka Has Changed And Its Not A Option At All From Your Point Of View.
Anyway Thanks Guys.

QAR, No offense to anyone else here, but make sure you get lots of opinions from lots of people -- especially from people who you can confirm have worked/ do work at KA.
You don' want to make an important decision like this based on too little info. KA wouldn't be for me, but if you really want to go there, do ALOT of research before you say, "No, I wont go" . . . Good luck

KA is a kip .
Ops management is composed of the worst mix of RAF / RAFesque and Aussies, providing an inappropriate 1960s militaristic anality as a backdrop for what largely are a decent bunch of line guys, although CRM as the west understands and applies it , is absent . And that combined with huge industrial discontent , I wouldn't be surprised by a prang soon.
Those are usually 2 common prang factors.
And one of the pilot managers is certainly leading by example on that front.
Then the local HK office clerks have developed a sneering begrudgery to the lads which again is totally inappropriate.
Pollution is now terrible , property expensive and so forth.
If you end up here you'll probably be happy for 6 weeks just because you have got a job but quickly you will realise that it really is a most undesirable place to be / work.

The question now is if you want to come to HKG why join KA and not CX?
Before the take over KA offered earlier command but that has evaporated and gone to maybe 6 or 7 years for both HKG 'bus and MAN 744 freight base.
There is no advantage anymore to joining KA rather than CX, why join the 2nd tier?

No good news. No improved rostering. Promotion slowing to a trickle. No direction. No increase in pay which is being savaged by Euro/American dollar spreads.
Quite depressing really.
Hong Kong inflation and pollution up. This week has been some of the worst pollution on record.
Don't come unless you have to- plenty of no shows for both interviews and courses recently!!!!!

KA's future
hey guys just wanted to add that about a month ago I heard from a pilot who's been one for the last 18 years that KA's going to be opening routes to Europe pretty soon....don't exactly know how true that is, though....
time will certainly tell us....but just, don't be surprised if that happens
cheers!
btw, has anyone else heard about this expansion (that is supposedly in the pipeline) ?

KA continues to operate European routes for CX cargo on the Classic and 744 freighters but no news of any other destinations on these fleets yet.
QAR, whilst it's important to gather information from different sources you will be well served by taking some note of what has been said on this and other threads. The message is consistent!
