hello fellow netizen,

Hey Essopeus,

I personally enjoyed the Principles of Flight book 1 and Meteorology book 9. Should keep you occupied for a while. Navigation on book 10 too if you have the time. -> oxford academy syllabus.

As for PPL level flying, i think the Flight Sim X has pretty informative course on the basics you'll learn on handling a light aircraft. Dont forget communications book 14 also for the lingo and phonetics. From simple straight and level, selective scans to landing. The feel isnt really there but should give you a very decent idea how things are done. Cut your learning curve if it does come down later on. All in all, its all fun to get along by while waiting.

PS: also u might wanna read on the basic T instruments on what does what and how they work to better grasp the idea of selective scanning.

I'm sure its all said and done b4 somewhere, all in all just my two cents... hope it helps. Good day.

Thanks godspear87!

I'm sure it's good advice even if it's been mentioned befor and hence worth another mention or two.

Will look into some books to better use my time in preparation and whilst waiting for SQ to call up for OBS.

I'm about to finish NS soon and I'm 22 this year.

What should I do next if I'm hoping to apply for SIA? I have the qualifications up to double dip.

And about how long before I set flight if say the current "drought" ends by the time I become a full fledged pilot? (drought referring to the surplus pilots but no flights to take..supposedly its true)

Stop being an arrogrant prick and listen to his advice. You asked for help. He gave you sound advice.

Ignore at your own farking peril. You wont get anywhere near a cockpit with that rolling eyes mentality.

I don't know how a rolling-eyes smiley is being arrogant. I used that smiley because the supposed sound advice given by him was to "get a degree and find a job" which is honestly very ambiguous to the extend where I understood it say "get a degree and find other jobs. Forget about being a pilot". I would tend to believe a sound advice would be something with tad much more explanation as to why is one recommending to get a degree and find a job.

And for you to barge right in calling me an arrogant prick when I wasn't being one, what does that make you? How one smiley can make you lunge out at somebody verbally, I think you've got issues.

Jeez why the uptightness around here?

Ignore him, he is nothing but an old snob who could not make it himself and tends to put down young aspiring pilots.

As far as the cadet pilot program is concerned, nothing is happening for atleast the next 6-8 months.

jber, what flyingmokey is saying is that there is no recruitment so why not make good use of time and get a degree. Besides you are under age to apply. You are 22 and min age is 26.

Competition is tough. Your CV better looks more superior compared to others if you want a shot at it.

SingaporeAirline is not a pilot. Didn't get to be one, perhaps.

@LieDetector, @greenpeace98: Wouldn't be surprised if that's true! Haha.

@jedidiahtan: Seems like SIA is going through some tough times huh. Advise taken! I totally forgotten about the 26 y/o age thing.

@flying.monkeyz: Agreed. While they try to sort things out would be great to go get a degree. I was actually considering whether to get a degree first then see how things go as to whether I want to pursue my passion or just get a job with the related degree. Would having a certain degree help in the application process though?

Cheers!

My advice is to do a degree you love to do. Don't just spend money on a degree for the sake of it, and drag yourself to lecture hall for the next 3 years. If your passion is flying, then do a flying-related degree. If flying is what you really want to do, the degree serves as an alternate, if things doesn't go according to plan, at least you have something to fall back on. So choose one that you know you'll love, even when you're on the ground. If your bank accounts allow, go do a degree with some flying component in it (e.g. Massey, UNSW etc), so that you have some flying experience. Years ago SQ seems to favour those with no flying experience, but I've seen a few, even CPL holders, joining as cadets. They get some hours exempted from flying so they can finish their course a little sooner.

I don't think there's any degree that really help in the application process. We've seen cadets from all sorts of background - bankers, engineers, lawyers, doctors... etc etc etc. It boils down to how you sell yourself in the interview. There were even a few with no degrees. Just a basic diploma, but these cadets have extensive background in aviation e.g. air traffic controller, air force weapons officer... etc.

If you don't know what to do at this stage, while waiting to hit 26, go be an ATC. You learn a lot about aviation, and if you can handle the stress level in the tower, you SHOULD be able to handle the stress inside the cockpit.

Good luck.

Getting a degree is the best advice right now. There are no jobs to be had right now, and there is a long queue to join SQ when they finally open. There are still selected cadets waiting to get called up, and throngs of university grads who have graduated this couple of years waiting to apply.

You think your double dip is strong enough to compete? Think again.

yeah, u're still only 22.

N since there's no openings for now, it's gd u shd go ahead n further ur studies.

the degree can act as a backup plan, so be sure that it's something u're interested in, at least.

getting into SQ is not a confirmed, many have tried, n many have failed, me being one of them.

Probable next intake

Hi all.

Heard from a SQ Capt from training that starting 2013, there will even be excess Captains and they will be allowed to take NPL as well.

As such, next probable intake might be as late as 2014 so I would recommend those aspiring to apply/still waiting to seek employment somewhere else first. However, the next batch that starts will indeed be bulldozing their way through the training stages much quicker than the cadets now without much of the "bottlenecking" and waiting. Pros and cons if you ask me.

Cheers guys and Merry Christmas!

Singapore flying college has just sold a Lear Jet (VH-SQR). They still have 4 Citation Mustangs on the Aussie register though. Don't think they fly much so who knows what they are doing with them.
