I have had very good results with Dell over 15 odd years. Two desktops and two laptops, all high spec. Good reliability, quality and very good customisation options.

A low level baulked landing in a 172 with flap 40 needs to be handled very carefully. My 1980 model was the last year with flap 40 I believe.

Agreed, not required, ATC know you have a connection. As seventhreedriver says, the radar label identifies this. In our region only the Middle East airlines tend to "announce" it.

No. Oddly there is an uplink RESUME NORMAL SPEED but no support for a downlink request. You can only request a fixed speed, or as you say "free text".

ACARS

To answer the original question, yes ACARS is the communication conduit for FANS CPDLC. ACARS uses VHF, SATCOM and (if enabled) HF, usually in that order of preference as specified by the operator.
