And how would that help? You can bring in viruses and diseases by train just as good as by air travel.
Also, the current railway system in Europe is way too underdeveloped to be a real alternative....

Better handling of the -800? I personally don't think so. The -700 was a joy to fly, powerful, reasonable approach speeds, and, albeit "slippery", still well manageable in descents.
