There is unlikely to be a random distribution of "pilots". Those involved will understand what is going on. The system has probably adapted so that what is really happening is continued flying...

Over-claim responsibility. Over-state the harm. Defuse the PR situation. Take control of the narrative.

Every large organisation faces screw ups. They are only judged harshly when they react...

The correct PR approach would have been a CEO statement like:

"While our staff did follow correct procedures, clearly we initiated a chain of events that resulted in a passenger in our care...

Not tardy at all.

Look, the overall search has different areas of possibility. The possibility of a crash closer to Malaysia has been declining, but was not zero.

Malaysian assets have been...

The Australian government is searching the most likely locations. What would you have them do, search the least likely locations?

Of course, if the wreckage if found at a given lat/lon then all...

The lower the frequency the more power is required to generate the sound.

Think about subwoofers in a stereo system; generally there is more amp power going to fill out the lowest octave than is...

Doppler shift gives you radial speed relative to the satellite. ie, a hypothetical plane flying a curved track along the 40 degree contour would have zero doppler shift (and constant ping time.) ...

Improving the inmarsat data.

To improve the precision of the inmarsat data two things could be done:

1. Hand the data over to some radio astronomers. Their toolset for dealing with signals is outstanding.

2. Fly a...

Inmarsat

No. At an earth station the incoming RF effectively filtered and downconverted to extract a section of the RF they care about. This downconvered segment is called an IF, and will be a much much...

Inmarsat

Normal telecoms (digital side of the sat modem at the earth station) would not yield anything useful. It is possible the raw analogue RF was being digitised and captured for diagnostic purposes. I...

Inmarsat

The inmarsat information with logon/logoff probes pretty well confirms that MAS was an active customer. No network provider would be probing non-customers in this way.

I had picked up the no sat...

Inmarsat.

I was one of those who questioned the Inmarsat ping results. The constant 40deg angle running near KL seemed questionable.

Now that the techniques have been validated against multiple aircraft,...

Rubbish spotted in the water.

On land, a crashed aircraft looks like a rubbish dump on a farm. Sadly, there are lots of rubbish dumps. In land searches each search aircraft might further investigate (eg circle) 1-2 candidate...

How satellite pings work.

The low data rate inmarsat services that work with omnidirectional antennas are not as sophisticated as the poster may imply. Inmarsat-C is a teletype era service.

Inmarsat

For starters, the satellite doesn't discriminate between anything. It's just a bent pipe retransmitting what it hears in an analogue sense. All demodulation and interpretation occurs on earth.

The simplest explanation is that inmarsat are tracing a terminal not installed on the lost aircraft.

Once ranging errors are allowed for, the likely location of the inmarsat terminal is the...
