Chris Philpott

I remember the article mentioned by V6; copies were sent to all crew members after the engine flameout incident.

I was under the impression that the Cladosporium had...

AA62,

I'll try and answer your question about 'dodgy fuel' and, if any of my facts are wrong, I'm sure that someone will enlighten me :)

Earlier in the thread, Smuj said that he worked on...

You see, Smudge, what to us would be 'as black as a witch's t-t' is, in Officer-speak 'stygian darkness'.

Which just goes to prove that, in the early '70s, while you and I were dripping honest...

A/C measurements

A/c are measured in 3D. As others have said, nose to tail is defined by Flight Stations (FS) and the datum is decided by the manufacturer and is typically forward of the actual nose.

Height is...

Flagging

I believe the term originated from the days when the Royal Navy ruled the waves.

Royal Naval ships would visit ports in the Empire, with all flags flying, to remind the 'natives' who was boss. The...

Doppler

It is Jun '81 and I am positioning to Akrotiri with a 70 Sqn crew. We had just crossed the Northern French coast, at around FL250, when there was a loud bang. I felt a pressure surge in my ears and...

Goose Bay

A couple of Goose stories..............

In the late 70's we were tasked to fly to Goose Bay and sit on the ground for 4 days - in January. The reason for the long stay has slipped my memory but we...

400K

Coff, I hope you’ll let me contribute on this auspicious occasion. This is a typical Albert down-route story. It is, however, quite long and I am a two-fingered typist who suffers from ‘cranker’s...

The old colour scheme wasn't very good at showing ice either.......

In the early '80s we were on a trip from Singapore to Brunei (to visit the same ex-ascoteer) when, climbing through FL170, the...

Thinking about lift and the external tanks.

In flight, and with a zero Angle of Attack, the external tanks should have no effect on lift but, if you have any AoA at all, there would be some lift...

Vulcan AAR

1066,

I was an instructor at STS during the first few months of AAR Training. According to my logbook we used Vulcan Tankers, mainly, in July '82.

I seem to remember that the Victors became...

Red Flag

A couple of Red Flag stories.....................

As Dougie M says, the USAF C-130s were regarded by the Aggressors as a turkey shoot. They flew, straight and level, at about 3,000'. In fairness...

Beasties

Doug,

You seem to have a penchant for nasty things in dark corners - it must be as a result of spending all those years in the nether regions of the Flt Deck. :)

Smudge,

I think the 'crew...

In our case, the 'jaspers' entered via a...
