Airframe failures are very uncommon. Most always due to pilot error of the pilot flying the thing at the time. Big problems are flight into thunderstorms, and inadvertent flight into IMC -> spiral...

Shouldn't you really be asking why the radar service didn't alert you? Even so, if you had collided, the story as given leads me to believe it would have been both pilots fault.
