i guess the battery rumor was true

Evidently 5400 lbs of lithium batteries were in the cargo bay of MH370.

Is there any path for fumes or vapors from the cargo bay back into the passenger compartment?

i was thinking that this...

Swelling of lithium cells in cargo bay

A -4 psi delta pressure on a cell could cause the casing (metal or plastic) to bulge outward and deform the internal current collectors and create an internal short circuit. A shorted cell could...

B777 cargo bay pressures?

i was thinking about how the reduced pressure in the cargo bay might affect a box full of lithium battery cells. What would be a typical or lowest exected pressure (e.g. highest altimeter pressure)?

At Vertical speed of -25fps

@mm43 chart:

From IMTOY to MDA only took 5 seconds,

Then to bottom of clouds, sink rate alert, just 8 more seconds.

Runway in sight, 3 more seconds.

By then the treetops were only...

How long does it take to build a panel?

This looks like an interesting case study for an MBA program. You have to wonder if any changes were made with the 2010 change in ownership that affected the manufacturing and assembly process?...

Would it be plausible in the above situation, that, thinking they were nearly at the MAP over the TH they might descend to the bottom of the clouds to look for the runway before doing the missed...

1.3 nm

After looking at MM43's chart and the graphs and earthviews, etc. it appears that they made contact with trees almost exactly 1.3 nm before the TH.

This seems a strange coincidence with the 1.3...

autopilot ?

Would it be possible to enter an incorrect value for the MDA @IMTOY, e.g. typo 1-2-0 or 2-0-0 instead of 1-2-0-0, and the autopilot would try to fly that profile? What are the typical safeguards or...

G/S angle?

@MM43

The FAA LOC18 approach plate that aterpster showed earlier had TCH of 48' and G/S angle of 3.28. Did you have a different plate, or why did you use 3.20 on your excellent profile graphic?

You mean the water molecules in the air?

Humid air has less oxygen per unit of volume (i.e. less dense) available for combustion, hence weaker mixture and lower engine power output. Air at sea level is denser than that at higher elevations...

It's all 'Nominally' at cabin pressure, but varies along the path.

@ Turin

On page 53 of the Airworthiness report is a figure showing the E/E compartment being just upstream of the overboard exhaust valve. The pressure in the cabin will be higher than in the EE...

i would think that the pressure in the Aft E/E is actually lower than cabin pressure since there is airflow into the EE from the cabin, so the delta P in the event configuration may...
