Not all COMMs are on the belly. Some Aircraft have VHF on both the belly and the roof. HF and SATCOM would also be usable. You can use SATCOM to call your girlfriend's cellphone if needed.

ACARS is not all knowing. If there is un-annuciated fire, ACARS will not know about it and will not report it.

Thanks for the suggestion. The FANS Operations Manual makes for interesting reading. Way more info than we get in our regular training. It looks like whoever programmed the turn didn't know about it...
