Perhaps the gear failed to retract?

If the pilot was fumbling, trying to manually move the J-Hook out of the way, and had a power lever migration he would have been in a world of hurt.

Maybe this is just an old wive's tale, I'd heard the limit was 180lbs, supposedly the force required to fly a DC3 OEI in whatever was considered...
