The World DC10 routing was OAK-LAX-BWI-LGW-FRA and vice versa so some of those 10's would have been lightweight to FRA whilst for a DC10-30 BWI was hardly a bridge too far and to carry excess metal...

As I recall the DC10-30 didn't need to use that additional gear, it could land without it if light enough but then it wouldn't next be able to take-off heavy if the gear wasn't already down.
