@Lonewolfe_50

Here is a link (if it works) to the NTSB docket regarding the PAPI's not being certified for aircraft with height 4 (Airbus 300).

Thanks for your reply. I am still sifting through all the postings, but I believe you have it correct.

I think there were posts about the PAPI's and MSAW.

If I remember, the PAPI's were on and the tower had disabled the MSAW due to so many false alerts.

I'll go back through and see what I can...

Beech 35

I have seen a guy actually fly the plane to the runway and try to do a flare with the V/S on the A/P.

We had a discussion afterwards.

Regards.

Dive and Drive

I remember those types of approaches and in the simulator, if you did not dive, you wouldn't see the airport no matter what. It was part of the "game".

Hopefully the NTSB will give us more...

@deSitter

I go the other way about this arrival.

I think they may have been too low to even see the PAPI or REIL's.

I need a little education.

I thought the 3.28 degree glide path from IMTOY to the 48' TCH was just an angle between those 2 points.

Does the PAPI angle actually hit IMTOY as depicted on your...

Speeds and Altitudes

I know this has probably been posted, but I didn't want to look back through 658 posts.

Does anyone know what their speeds and altitudes were at BAKSN and IMTOY?

Regards.

Tubby Linton

I've been wondering that myself.

As a very speculative guess, I would say that they were using the V/S on the automation and possibly forgot about it, or were otherwise distracted.

Taking from...

Thumbs up Desert 185

Amen Brother!

I believe you and I are on the same sheet of music.

Automation is a good thing, but at the end of the day, it is just a tool.

Eventually you have to just fly the airplane...

I mentioned the RWY 27 Localizer approach at KSAN for an example of the visual cues to have flying down the side of the hill. It is a strange illusion sometimes, especially at night.

That...

Your comment appears correct regarding minimums when on a visual approach.

But, were they visually proceeding at the point of the runway in sight call?

At this time, there does not appear to be...

NA on the Plate

I meant from the point that it is simply a restriction on paper.

Just because it said NA, if they had been at the MDA until PAPI and REIL's were completely visual, there would have possibly have...
