I've recalled a number of airports with warnings on approach plates...something like: CAUTION, do not mistake freeway lights for runway lights.

I'm sure you all remember the old RNAV systems, so I won't explain them here.

it seems to me that you level off at MDA and either see the runway or not...if not ,...

I think all the gadgets in the world really don't make for a better approach than a loc/dme...

just read the altimeter setting and it was not...

just read the altimeter setting and it was not too far off standard, so I am thinking it wasn't altimetry...29.97 is close enough to 29.92 that it shouldn't have caused the crash...

non precision approach, night or semi night conditions , wondering if they had the runway in sight and lost it in low scud, or somehow decieved by low hanging...
