yes, but limited to 2.5 AND each time - depending on speed and AoA. It appears as though everyone is assuming it trimmed at the max limit each time - and I’m curious where that information is found....

Excellent [possible] suggestion. it is entirely possible that they were aware of what would happen at flaps up - and were managing the trim while trying to diagnose. Then something went awry....
