In fact in a lot of Airports if it's not working on the ground they call you up and ask you to turn it on so their ground movement...

I agree! What happens when the lead Aircraft flys into cloud?? Not easy to formate in IMC at night when you aren't trained for it. Almost impossible I'd say.

Our 777's were fitted with HF DATA LINK only when they needed to fly over the Polar regions where Satcom was not always available.

VHF is normally the preferred cheaper option, followed by SATCOM....
