MB, Its the intersection of two spherical surfaces. One being the earths surface the other being the locus of all points a certain distance from the satellite based on signal travel time.

Terrain masking? Couldn't a descent be in response to depressurization, or at least announced to pax as such if nefarious to keep up appearances?

I understand that a/c carry a manually deployable ELT unit. If this is correct if activated inside the cabin would the signal be detectable ?

My experience as a pax without any claims to rigour is that things loosen up in the cabin just after reaching cruise. People get to their feet and movement starts.

ACARS. Not known to the general public but surely known to the authorities. These plus primary skin paints ought at least to eliminate some outcomes.
