Breakup

If wreckage was spread over a large area of water, it's likely some of it would have been found by now.

Either it entered the water largely intact and didn't generate much (if any) flotsam, or it...

Not really...

They would have mashed the mic button and told ATC they were returning, if for no other reason than to request the equipment. And there are plenty of other reasons to tell ATC,...

Mandarin?

I took that to mean English was the spoken language, it was originally written up in Mandarin, and then translated back to English.

No, I don't know why. LiveATC.com actually has a recording of...

Motivation

Presuming the CVR is of the two-hour, looping variety, only the last two hours of cockpit activity would be recorded. The only way the CVR would have anything useful would be if someone was still...

Tonight's BBC report

One big thing I took away from this is that the Australians appear to be taking a larger public role, as is the NTSB. That's good.

The other big thing is the AMSA guy saying there were multiple...

Under Annex 13, Malaysia can request/obtain formal assistance or delegate responsibility to anyone they want at any time.

In the know

You're right, none of us are entitled to know anything, but as a member of the general public, it would kinda/sorta be nice to know if there's a rogue T7 out there somewhere. There's also a not-small...

Inmarsat

Unless there's some Sekrit Skwirrel Blowing Snow going on preventing it, we'd all be a lot better off if Malaysia would turn this over formally to the NTSB. The incompetence is staggering.

That...

D.S.

Not my understanding of the public information. ACARS was shut down shortly after feet wet and before Malaysian ATC bid the flight farewell. Shortly after which the transponder(s) was/were disabled....

AMF

Some have discussed in this thread -- and many more have discussed elsewhere, including in the lamestream media -- MAS370's last words to ATC. On one level, unless it was "Allahu akhbar!" or "Mayday,...

Why ACARS first?

Sure:

-- You're the bad guy. The a/c is at TOC, so it's time to get to work hiding.
-- After the TOC message is sent, shut down ACARS first, since you're still in Malaysian ATC radar coverage....
