Start in 'safe' mode: Hold down the Shift key when booting. It will do a number of checks while starting up so it takes longer than usual. You should see a progress bar (boring grey on grey) though.

Have you tried booting in safe mode? (Hold down the shift key). It takes quite a bit longer, but it does some tests etc. while it's booting.

Also - If you don't have Disk Warrior, you should....

Worked perfectly - rebuild the directories on each partition using DiskWarrior - and they needed doing1 :ok:

I've got a couple of external HDs connected via...

I've got a couple of external HDs connected via USB to my airport. Neither Disk Utility nor Diskwarrior can see the drives - although they both see Firewire drives.

Neither USB HD are bootable.
