My dictionary gives 1945 as the date of first use...

My dictionary gives 1945 as the date of first use for "black box." If it's right, a WWII origin seems like a good bet.

Would there be any value in scattering a few extra pingers around the airframe? There'd be no guarantee, of course, that any that worked would end up in the vicinity of the recorders. But even ones...

Of course in this case, orange tapes might have saved a few days after the wreckage was located, but wouldn't have helped find it in the first place.

My mind keeps connecting the orangish cast in front of the chassis with the darker area behind it. Can't come up with a theory on what that connection might be, though.
