You can be go to pre selection day with more than 500 short, but not to the sim until less than 500 short. At least that was how it was for me!

No sim time. But they start process if within 500hrs and you can put in an application before this.

I just confirmed the unfreezing of my ATPL at the next RST. No problems, and no mention of new contract or anything else untoward. Flight deck 'chinese whispers' at work again ;)
