Red moon right now over London

Yes, but that post is 30mins prior to Moonset. 7.5 deg above horizon.

'Normal' pollution would make the Moon red at that altitude as you are looking NW across London and most of the UK pollution....

10 miles West of LHR.
17th April 2010

Went outside this evening at at maybe 1915 and 2115 you could smell the ash at ground level.

In between and after that, no smell.

Clear sky, no funny...

KLM705

KLM705 is a 737-406 test flight sent up by KLM at the request of the EU.

Been sent up to test the effects of ash on parts of the aircraft.

Met Office update

There's a bit of news from the Met Office. They did a test flight over the North sea and found some volcanic ash.

They are reporting three layers, with large particles down at 8000ft....

Duration of the event

I have not seen much focus by the media on the duration of this event.

Even if it just goes on for a few weeks, the effects could be major for Northern Europe.
