I think you need to look at the tax implications of this, if you pay up front you pay the current rate of tax on the money that you pay for the type rating, so a rating that costs £ 20 K costs you...

As NAS move into the North of the UK it matters not if there is a Base at Liverpool or Manchester just as long as there is enough in the way of connections to the pilots base airport

The taxation issue is also complicated in the UK by which agency you are "employed" by.

This will all soon be academic as soon all the pilots will be employed by a local NAS subsidiary company.
