Perhaps a Vortex Stalled the Airplane

A vortex downwind of a ridge can produce a shear of twice the wind aloft in the blink of an eye.

Upwind or Downwind of the Ridge?

Upwind would be in updraft.

Downwind could be downdraft and nasty rotors.

Much depends on wind direction relative to terrain, strength and shears. You could be flying in a particular area...
