I used to do that in a Beech 18 from LHR about the same time. I think we used to arrive about 0300. All very scary. As I was young and foolish I didnt realise!!.

When the pink one was parked it made a grand visual navigation aid when flying in grotty vis when I was air taxiing from Sywell and Cov.

After Court Line closed down a pink Tristar was...

After Court Line closed down a pink Tristar was parked for ages on the airport. When vis was not so good it was a great navigation aid for "VFR" flights transiting the area!
