Qantas had a similar problem flying to Perth some six months ago and the crew handled it ok.
Maybe new approaches to crew training required for some other airlines.

If it is not been said before, there was a gap of two weeks before a nuclear sub was sent to locate the recorder. Given the approx thirty days of recorder life a major error.

From reading the papers, it would appear that a lot of days were wasted before they got a submarine on site to listen for the pings.
