Georg1na - you fly the manoeuvres in the Lynx without ASE since the gyros topple and you want maximum control response rate - the yaw channel stays in but that's it :ok:

Georg1na - thing is, if all helicopter pilots did as Eagle 86 and FH1100 suggest, we would have far fewer accidents and incidents to discuss on these pages. Sadly, it would seem they do not.

Since Agile started the thread with a question about which type of approach to use and when - it seems to have a been a reasonable discussion covering a number of options.

Yes Agile - it is apparent groundspeed. When you fly in an airliner at 30,000 ft the ground doesn't seem to be moving past you very fast, even though you are doing in excess of 500Kts. Come down to 3...

Excellent - and don't forget the transition into forward flight - nice and slow or it all happens at once - it will want to roll to the right (transverse flow) before you get to the vibration...

aa777888 - another thing for you to try next time you go flying.

Make a normal constant angle, speed reducing approach until you get to the burble/vibration and then hold the speed steady.

I'm not sure what you don't get - the ground doesn't produce the vortex, it comes from the rotor wash reacting with the ground. The rotor vortices exist without the presence of the ground as well.

Semantics alert!!!!

The vibration is not transverse flow - it is the boundary of ETL (not incipient, not fully developed just ETL) and is due to the vortices clearly shown in the diagram. It...

Just go and try what I suggested. If you do it smoothly you will encounter transverse flow (inflow roll) towards the advancing side with NO vibration. It is due to the difference in the inflow angles...
