Surely this is simple? To change the direction of motion of a mass requires a force. Turn a jet's airflow back on itself and you require a rearward (decelerating) force. QED? Exactly the same as...

What indeed is the 'official explanation'? It is an oft-quoted mantra that 'reversers are more effectiv/efficient at high speed' but I think perhaps we should insert than wheelbrakes in there?...
