On the subject of previous ATPL exam passes... does it make a difference if they were 15+ years ago? Clearly expired and of no current use, but still held on record somehow?

I'd go distance learning if I were you. Do it over 12-18 months or so, hour build at the same time, keep your salary coming in, then do your training. By that time there might be a job for you!
