Exactly - I had one pop open just after takeoff for this reason. It was hinged on the side so a kick of the rudder shut it. Hardly an inflight emergency... (I was only a student too back then)

You can buy a little folder (that won't fit in a shirt pocket) to store them in - I eventually did this.

The AOPA guide includes all ALAs in Australia, the country airstrip guides are divided in to states - howver you do get the neat little 'mud maps' and the info is laid out in an 'ERSA-like' format...
