I'm sure 121 ops is probably even higher...though I never heard of any minimums for that...

I mean to be PIC of a 121 op you have to have an ATP I believe, and for that you need 1500 hours...

that's probably for charter/cargo operations. At least that's how it is here in the US. For charter/cargo single pilot IFR ops you need 1200 hours here in the US (the 700 hours you talk of for JAA)

landing fees are the worse. You only get those here when you try to land (stupidly) at O'Hare, LAX or JFK or some gigantic airport like that...and SOME FBOs charge you...

I've been looking around, and renting a basic trainer like a PA28 or 172 is about 110 british pounds.

Multis like the Seneca are like over 200 pounds.

How practical is it to fly GA in Europe?

I ask because in the US you can buy youself a Piper Warrior for 50 grand, and fixed costs are usually less than 3 or 4 grand a year...and operating costs are usually pretty cheap due to low fuel...
