More accurately, it is an Autothrottle 'HOLD' trap, as it can happen any time the the A/T goes into HOLD mode, with the A/P disengaged.

The trim system on the 777 compensates for thrust...

The trim system on the 777 compensates for thrust changes, configuration changes (gear, flap & speedbrake) and turns. It won't trim for speed changes.
So it doesn't matter if the auto throttle is in...
