the reason the Va increases with weight, is that it's just to do with stalling speed.... it's the speed you want...

Personally, I have it on while I'm currently doing my PPL, tracking with CloudAhoy... but the next thing I do is mute it and stick it in my bag in the back seat. No airplane mode, but also no buzzing...

I would imagine the vast majority of CFIT is when the pilot cannot see the terrain... hence it's "controlled flight"... even in the model example, you have the luxury of being able to see the wall.....
