We must remember that the 777 is a Fly By Wire aircraft - even with the Autopilot off. There is also a ram-air turbine after the batteries fail - which they wouldn't in a descent from 35K or so...

Don't forget that the last 25 minutes or so are gliding down from 35000 feet at an average speed of maybe 220 knots with a descent rate of maybe 1400 fpm. That is dependent on what/who is controlling...
