ELT's do find survivors

In the US, Civil Air Patrol occasionally finds survivors from an ELT activation. In fact, ELT's tend to fail with crashes bad enough to kill all on board.

I remember one a few years back where a...

Why are they on sale? Because people want them and they have uses. The lower powered ones are used for pointing out celestial objects during amateur astronomy, and I would suspect this usage results...

Per NASA, ELT's are picked up by GEOSAR and LEOSAR. I have not heard of GNSS satellites able to do this. Only LEOSAR can give a location unless the ELT transmitted location data.

I keep seeing reference to dye bags. I don't think those will be of much use. Back in my P-3 days, we had Fluorescein dye in the sonobuoys. They were visible, but not that great, and they...

121.5/243.0 no longer used on Sats, at least by US

The 121.5/243.0 was shut down, at least for the US. All ELT's were supposed to transmit on 406 by 2009, so they stopped listening. Sadly, most ELT's in the US are still not on 406, which means now...

It looks like the COSPAS-SARSAT rules are not made for this kind of situation - where the ELT may be shortly submerged or destroyed but there is a very large interest in locating the wreckage,...

For all the complaints about security and security theater, it has succeeded in preventing another 9-11 style attack. We can never totally secure travel, but preventing hijacking is more important...

Wreckage may have been sighted, but could not be investigated

The initial aerial search efforts by sizeable numbers of multiple engine aircraft, with multiple searchers aboard - that produced precisely nothing - is what remains the most disconcerting feature...

The search isn't over yet

They still have a fair amount to search, and I'm really hoping they find it. From a Bayesian standpoint, though, the odds go down the longer they search.

Nothing new here

I agree with Mad (Flt) Scientist (http://www.pprune.org/members/58150-mad-flt-scientist) - the media story is just nonsense, as far as I can tell from reading the report. I see nothing new - just an...

Laser protection

Lasers operate on fixed wavelengths - the bright green ones that eyes are most sensitive to are at 532nm. Safety glasses exist that strongly attenuate that wavelength without blocking much else. It...

A central fuel tank explosion would cause an instantaneous catastrophic failure. I don't know how that can be ruled out given what we know, although I presume actions taken after TWA800 have reduced...

Center fuel tank explosion?

How about a central fuel tank explosion similar to TWA800? Has that been completely prevented by actions taken since TWA800, or is it still a possibility? Such an explosion would explain all the...

CVR Bandwidth

I looked at specs for a couple of CVR's. One had a bandwidth of 3kHz and the other 5kHz. The microphone bandwidth would likely have been higher.

This means that a sample of the sound (think...

Not conclusive

"He said the explosion would not be secondary to engine failure, which would remove the assumption of the accident."

This does not remove the possibility of an accident. For example, a fuel tank...

I don't think the main challenge is processor power these days, although that is an issue. The really hard part - still very much in the research area - is making sense of the image. These days,...

Yes, automation can handle unforseen events

Automation of very complex processes, such as autonomous cars (or aircraft) is not just a practice of thinking up every scenario and programming the autopilot to handle it.

Modern software is...

Wave height measurements and drift hindcasting

As far as I know, the remote sensing for determining wave heights works indirectly. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and scatterometry (a form of SAR) can estimate surface winds. From a history of...

ELT's are not good, and not the solution for Air Transport

I've been involved in tracking down ELT's for 30 years. In my opinion, they are mostly junk. All but one that I found was a false alarm - usually triggered by a mechanic, or by being thrown in a...

For the purposes of estimating safe pressures, the density of sea water is virtually constant (variation ~1%), and thus the pressure is mostly linear with depth.

The small variations in density in...

I have noticed that Echo and Ocean Shield report at the same time. This suggests that a proxy is providing the reports - perhaps AMSA.
