keeping SATCOM up makes perfect sense

@Ornis
@D.S.

Here is why network links are kept up. Suppose you have a scenario generating LOTS of ACARS messages in succession (e.g. AF447). If each message has to set up and tear down the link...

deplorably dismal data

Is anyone else troubled by the lack of accurate empirical data released to date?

Was ACARS log-off received?
Was AMSS log-off message received?
Was ADS logged on and contract established...

ACARS and VHF

@Sicer

Reportedly VHF radio disabled by pulling CB. SATCOM uses sep radio and freq for its comm. SATCOM was not disabled.

Result: No VHF comm even if over land. SATCOM only.

ACARS manual shutdown

@Ian_W

Precisely right!

ACARS log-off from the cockpit is a reasonable interpretation that fits two stated facts:

cessation of normal ACARS data
multiple hourly SAT data link...

previous pings

@ekpilot

Short answer is yes. I believe this fits the category of information withheld. One can posit a range of reasons for the authorities slowly releasing tidbits they have known for some time....

satellite pics of a/c in flight

@uncle_maxwell

That is an interesting proposition. If IR sat photos, taken at night, are available that cover each arc at the time of a given ping it is a reasonable computational exercise to use...

Thanks for clarifying. If there are more frequent "pings" then a/c location should be more precisely fixed than being publicly stated.

Also, as lakedude pointed out earlier, I think many are...

Precisely! I'd like to see a map showing each ping and it's arcs. I suspect the USN has this information.

Sat link and "pings"

It has been reported that last sat contact was 8:11AM MYT (00:11 UTC) and loss of SSR occurred at ~01:21AM MYT (17:21 UTC). That is an elapsed time of just under 7 hours. If there was an hourly data...

I've researched the underlying comm protocols a bit. Can anyone here clarify whether the "ping" refers to the AMSS R channel protocol transmission from AES to GES?

EGPWS

@Etud_lAvia

It appears that we are in agreement!

My idea is an enhanced EGPWS mode (2?) that would address the short landing CFIT scenario exemplified by this accident.
