AF Accident rate

Two points:
1. Arbitrary start date, 1988, moves Habsheim crash into the 1988-2009 period.

pinger life/search resources

tekata: trouble is, that's 3 ships that are appropriately equipped (by my count), plus some odds and sods (frigates? submarines?) which won't be able to contribute much. Very difficult to make an...

Phil Gollin - FDR/CVR search & recovery

I don't know about the status of the search, or about the 'true' battery life of the devices. Other people have commented on these issues. I used to work in the hydrographic survey industry, so I can...

You can extend the battery life very easily by reducing the ping rate most of the battery power is expended in putting acoustic energy into the water.

Halving the ping rate would do something...

The problem isn't recovering the recorders when they're underwater, it's finding them (there's always some sort of ROV or submersible that can get to the wreckage). So all the battery power available...

Nice idea, but it won't work. You need somone to receive the sonar data you've transmitted. It will be detectable at about the same range as the pinger, or (probably) a shorter...
