This may seem like a dumb question, but when is the flight data recorder turned on?

Like for example, would the flight data recorder be turned on if there crew is going to perform a ground run-up...

Any JT8D operators here? Considering the price of oil these days, anyone have thoughts on what's in store for the JT8Ds? Or any low bypass commercial engine for that matter?
