So what does conventional wisdom say you should do about it? Leave it to spin down on its own or cage it as I've seen some people do? An action which I suspect could do some damage.

As you say, the info about your contact is rather vague. His/her chances would be ok if he has a Part 66 licence,B1 and/or B2; especially with a few types.

Part 66 B2

On my 66 B2 licence, I have groups, aeroplane and helicopter, 66A.45(g). Anyone know what they are or how to find out? My present outfit are still working the old CAA system and have no info.

I agree; 10 seconds is the max. Any longer - change the battery. They usually flash every 5 to 7 seconds.
