That "lightning" wouldn't happen to have been a repetitive double flash would it? sounds like the white strobes flashing in cloud, the great un washed down the back wouldn't know the difference!!

In the last week I've flown that route 4 times and each time we diverted up to 60 NM off track, no big deal. The CB's and larger convective clouds were quite clear on the Radar and we avoided them....

5star not true on the 777. the speedbrake is very effective maintaining 180 kts or so down the glideslope with flap 5. So effective that you don't even need full speedbrake:).
