The current tower was built in the early 1980s. The tower on top of the old domestic terminal was still in use in late 1981; I reckon that tower operations moved to the middle of the airport in 1982,...

Nope. Approach stays where it is. I believe it was discussed between the various parties, but when it came down to it, there was no "operational necessity" to have the tower and TCU co-located.
