That's slightly wrong.

You can have a PPL, but you will be starting the course as a Zero (so fresh). Many if not nearly all of the intakes recently have PPL's and likely had begun hours building....

I imagine references will be required upon successful recruitment / offer.

It will also usually be the case of the company in question contacting your referees and not the other way round.
