The reason for the clean install instead of an upgrade from XP is that it requires Vista drivers or at least that's what the copy I've got says. The upgrade doesn't do the drivers so I believe.

Unfortunately before I found the problem windows explorer took a dive and would only stay up for 17 seconds. I had to do a hard drive wipe and reinstall windows. Cured it though but a tad severe.
