It took me 21 hrs at a flight school in Florida, not including the actual test. Do lots of Flight Simulator practice to reduce the flying hours a bit. I did not think it was worth going to the US...

24 hrs in the Super Cub and 30 learning to fly gliders to Silver C standard, so it wasn't that bad a summer, at least around Cambridge.
