I'm thinking about foam in ear plugs rather than the molded variety, they expand to fill the ear nicely and seem quite comfy. The molds are just for sets which have ear hooks rather than a band...

Have you considered learning on motor gliders?
You can get a NPPL for about £3,500 that way (about 55 hours).
Then you can simply do a type conversion to group A if you want to.

I've flown in the above mentioned Ogar and wouldn't consider it remotely 'nasty' to fly.
Handling seems fine, visibility is good, it's a lot more roomy than a falke and costs about the same to run...

I want a cheap and easy solution. That impedance matching box looks good but costs more than I paid for the headset.

What does your instructor use? If it's 13.4s then you won't have any compatability issues - my DC 10-40s don't work well with my instructors 13.4's because of different mic impedances.
