The Power of Words
Jay Hopkins writes an interesting article in the September 'Flying' magazine on words to avoid in the cockpit. It's not online yet, just got my glossy copy.
He suggests - a belief I among many others have long emphasised with students and fellow flight crew - that we will tend to do what we say. Therefore we must be extremely vigilant about what verbiage emerges from our lips while operating aircraft in any phase of flight. Hopkins instances "probably", "usually", "always", "I'm sure", "it must be...." which (often when coupled with mitigation responses from fellow crew or from controllers) can have fatal consequences. Among my forbidden utterances are anything evoking "quick", and "back". What words or phrases, if any, are strictly verboten on your flight deck? |
Answer: "Mate."

Say Again
Nearing the end of a long night, flogging over the Atlantic, a these words were heard over the crew i/c. "Captain Crew, PRIOR WARNING" Now that did get my attention!

Enjoying the humorous responses, guys.
However, wouldn't mind some serious ones as well. |
